I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I told you that we saw nearly a 1000 waterfalls during our trip to Iceland, yes that was no typo…One thousand!! Small… tall… gigantic and every size in between. Literally I could create an album titled Chasing Waterfalls and that would be one way to describe our trip!
But there are a few that stand out as quite exceptional and epitomizes the raw beauty of Iceland.
Gullfoss (pics 1 and 2) is one of them. You hear its roar even before you see it building so much anticipation. This is where the Hvita river thunders into a 2km long canyon with enough force to send spray bellowing hundreds of meters skywards. Prepare to get soaked, what fun is it otherwise?
Dettifoss (pic 3) – Europe’s largest and most powerful waterfall in terms of volume can be heard from a mile away. The size and scale of the mammoth waterfalls minimizes everything around it. There are many viewing platforms and pathways to admire its beauty from. You cannot avoid getting soaked…note I said ‘soaked’, not ‘wet’! Waterproof clothing from head to toe is a must.
Skogafoss (pic 4) - is a justifiably dramatic curtain of a waterfall that cascades nearly 60 meters from a plateau. The flat gravel riverbed in front of the plunge pool is the closest you can hope to get to before getting blown off by the outward blast of air caused by the force of falling water.
Godafoss (pic 5)
Spot the people in the pictures to get a reference of the sheer magnitude of these thunderous falls.
